Taking a break from sports card collecting
Over the years, I have received 1,234 pieces of feedback as a buyer on eBay. That has all happened since October 2004. If you spread it over that long a period of time, then it is not totally shocking for somebody that avidly collects sports cards to have more than a thousand transactions. My collection mostly contains George Brett cards mixed in with baseball, football, and some hockey. Over the last few years, I have picked up a bunch of classic Colorado Avalanche player cards, Kansas City Chiefs autograph cards, and Kansas City Royals player autograph cards. Most of the autograph cards were not graded, and I try to get on-card autographs versus those pesky stickers. My auto card collections sit in binders. That has worked out well enough. I tend to just pick up the bottom of the market Chiefs and Royals player autographs. Instead of opening packs, it is much easier to just pick up these lower-priced autos where every auction is essentially a hit vs. a more expensive pack that would just be full of common cards and no autographs. Just because the person who pulled the auto did not want it does not mean it won’t fit right into my personal sports card collection.
Right now, I’m decided to take a break from sports card collecting. A lot of that has to do with the frequency of getting outbid on eBay at the last moment these days. Something changed over the last few years where auctions don’t really auction anymore. Somehow, it seems like everybody just magically drops bids at the last second, and no actual action part happens. It's really like one of those silent auctions where nobody knows what anybody bid until the end, and a winner is announced. My only three methods of engaging in sports card collecting have been buying retail packs, visiting an actual card store, and buying on eBay. Maybe at some point later this summer, I’ll revisit this break from sports card collecting. I have had many of these such breaks over the years where I just leave the hobby alone for months on end.
