All those possible futures
Sure, you knew it was going to happen. I was back watching season 4 of Andromeda again, wondering about all those possible futures that Trace elected not to follow. Sure, the show probably would have been better if they had let Robert Hewitt Wolfe actually keep things on track. Instead, we ended up with a different possible future that could easily be rewound as a moment where Trance was pondering things. At some point, we certainly will be able to have an AI-generated version that fulfills the coda version. I’m not entirely sure that is for the best, but maybe when everything is just a wonderland of AI-generated virtual spaces, a return to that alternate possible future might be for the best. I know that sounds a bit surreal, but interactive virtual spaces are not that far off, and after that framework and technology are established, the question will be what environments will end up being built. A world somewhat like what was described in Ready Player One as the OASIS is probably almost possible or at least could be in the process of being built. I’m not buying that we are 10-20 years off from a functional metaverse of sorts.
One of the things that will or potentially could change as a result of all that digital wonderland is how sports are played and enjoyed. It would be awesome to watch some of the best classic Colorado Avalanche games recreated in a virtual setting where I could be right in the first row. That is probably something where the shift to recording sporting events in 3D will really make that possible. That is more of a question about being immersed in something that happened vs. experiencing something that was created. Getting a feeling for the coda version of Andromeda within that future virtual setting is something I’m cautiously optimistic about now that I have considered it, but I still am a little worried about what we might end up with when the digital dust settles. Things are going to be shifting in terms of content delivery and interaction.
Tonight I’m going to watch some playoff hockey on TNT. The series is all tied up at 2-2 and tonight will be big for gaining the initiative. My plan is to turn on the coverage here in a few minutes to watch all the pregame nonsense. Part of really getting into the finals season is watching the pregame and getting hyped up for the big games. Soon enough the NBA and NHL seasons will be done and summer will just continue moving along. We are in that window where championships are won. A lot of the Oilers fans still have number 99 jerseys on for the game. Some of the pregame coverage of studio 99 was pretty interesting. The video quality of some of the related highlights they showed was pretty questionable. That classic hockey content does not upscale very well apparently. Somebody would have to put some serious effort into making that happen.
