Looking around for more

This is a recording of my blog from December 4, 2019

Whoa — I’m working on thinking out loud in a more productive way this morning. It could be the two shots of espresso from my Nespresso Expert machine or it might just be one of those days. Writing is happening, but very slowly. Today is one of those days where it is easier to spend the time looking around for more instead of focusing in on what is happening now.

One of the things that I did not appreciate about high school, but now looking back have given some thoughts is the accessibility of periodicals. Literally, I read every major magazine and newspaper that the school had. Both the debate and forensics teams encouraged that type of activity. Looking back that was actually a rather special thing to be able to do that even now I cannot recreate. First, It would be cost prohibitive to subscribe to so many sources. Second, I’m not entirely sure the content experience would be the same. Some of those news magazines are not the same anymore. Instead of consuming everything that a magazine had to say which was really a reflection of the editor of that periodical we get rather single serving slices of breaking news.

You could get a feel for how an editor put things together over the course of time. Some news magazines and journals had a very specific feel thanks to the careful eye of an editor that really dug in and imposed a standard. That is something that I have come to miss over the years.

P.S. Over the last couple of weeks, I have watched a few guitar pedal demo videos for the Gamechanger Audio Plasma Coil and the corresponding collaboration with Jack White. It looks like a wonderful guitar pedal concept with a rather unique method. I’m not looking to replace the Earthquaker Devices black ash endangered fuzz on my pedalboard, but this pedal could be a valid option if a device failure occurred on the black ash pedal.
