2018: Day 65 the one where I wondered about NiceHash payments
Word count 151,428 + 1,001 or 152,429 of 1,000,000

Dear Reader,

Today seems a little bit hazy here in the first hour after dawn. My Nespresso Expert machine made a wonderful lungo pull of coffee this morning. That little bit of joy was enough was enough to get me thinking about my NiceHash cryptocurrency mining efforts. My last payment came on March 5, 2018 about 5 days after the previous payment. Overall you can see from the below data that payments are getting spread out over more and more days. That means the 100 day mining effort to recover my return on investment for one ASUS Dual series GeForce GTX 1060 DUAL-GTX1060-O3G 3GB 192-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 HDCP ready video card. That will require mining about $323.73 USD worth of currency. At the moment my mining efforts have garnered about 0.0181 BTC in the last 64 days. With only 36 days left it is possible that my mining efforts will not provide any return on my investment.

My new writing strategy is going to have to include knocking out 1,500 words in the morning by capturing time between 05:00 and 08:00 hours. That block of time is probably the key to being able to stay on track toward writing 1,000,000 words in the same year. Overall, I am way over target given everything that happens today. Locked down to just the word count on this blog my word count is woefully behind. That just means that I need to mix things up a little bit and try some different things to help move forward.

Topic 1: Connecting TiVo to my Google Home Mini

Ok —- I went out to check on a website related to TiVo and IFTTT (if this, then that). It looks like a few applets exist to help a Google Home device communicate with TiVo. The SmartHome part of the whole setup is what connects the two devices together. More and more devices are capable of voice interaction. Some of those devices are going to be able to control other devices. The only smart device I have wanted to purchase relates to getting 3 of the Philips Hue light bulbs for my office. I would like to be able to change the ambient color of my office to match my mood or for holiday events or parties. Maybe I have considered buying a Ring video doorbell. Now that Amazon has acquired them that is off the table. The Nest version is more expensive, but it might be what ends up on my device list.

Strangely enough I do not need any of the new home automation devices. They seem interesting and they have a certain degree of novelty, but they do not get anywhere close to being something that I need to have. Really the only smartphone automation that I find really compelling is controlling my family room entertainment center using the Google Home Mini, Google Assistant from my phone, or some other voice capable device.

Topic 2: Writing to the point of intellectual exhaustion

Today is day 65 of this epic writing journey. The general idea was to try to write 3,000 words per day to help get passed all the nonsense and push toward something new. Sometimes you just have to get all the easy words out and work past the point of intellectual exhaustion. That is probably where we are right about now. Just like people sometimes write a book or two before they hit a groove and produce something that is readable. Seriously, getting down to the real point of this writing endeavor it is about the journey. It is about what happens halfway into the project. It is about what happens at the end of the project.

Topic 3: I went to a caucus

We are gathered in a high school gym. The people here are engaged. They are energized and involved. These folks are here because they care about the community. Looks like over 200 people are here to engage in the caucus tonight. All these folks could be doing other things. They could be tuned into some television show. It was good to see so many folks that wanted to work together. This was my first caucus in Colorado. It was very interesting and it was an event that I would go to again. Ten of us sat in a room. We like a jury talked about each and every position that would be on the ballet. I was truly impressed with the degree of consideration that each person gave each candidate. We talked about every one of them in detail. People shared facts and opinions. Preferences were discussed. We did not do any straw polls. We just voted on the positions one at a time. About three hours of my night were spent at the caucus event. That pretty much means that you are only going to get 1,000 words of blog post tonight. That is ok for today. Participating in a part of the democratic process was worth the trade off tonight.

Topic 4: My thumbnail for today

My Nexus 9 is powered up and ready to write. I have been thinking about using my Nexus 9 with a keyboard to engage in some writing tomorrow. It seemed like it would be fun to use that device. It would be a sort of throwback to a few years ago. Right now I only really write using my Chromebook. It has been a pretty useful device. I’m getting used to the keyboard. Taking a photograph of my Nexus 9 seemed like a good idea at the time. It was hard to get a good photograph of it.
